Registering as a stem cell (bone marrow) donor

Once you register as a potential donor, your tissue type will be analysed (often by a simple mouth swab) and your details will be stored and matched against patients in desperate need of a stem cell transplant.

Only a very small amount of registered donors are actually found to be a match for a patient, so it’s a bit like winning the lottery if you are called to say your tissue type closely matches a patient in need!
