Why blood donation matters
Every second of every day, people around the world – of all ages and from all walks of life – need a blood transfusion to survive. It is a vital treatment used in everything from cancer and blood disorders to burns and accidents. The reasons for transfusions vary, but the demand for blood is ever-present and growing and more blood donors than ever are required to meet these demands.
Blood donors are the world’s lifesavers, contributing over 100 million blood donations a year. Blood can’t be manufactured, it can only come from generous donors who choose to help others. Every single blood donation (a procedure that takes around 10 minutes) can save the lives of up to 3 others. In fact, an adult could potentially donate enough blood to save the lives of over 1000 people during their lifetime!
Despite the desperate need for this life saving resource, very few of us make a difference by choosing to donate. Giving blood is quick, easy and it saves lives.
